GREEN CUBE

MARCH 11 -
APRIL 11, 2010

Opening reception: Thursday, March 11, from 6 to 8 pm

NOMA Gallery is pleased to present the first Bay Area solo exhibition of new paintings by Mark Flood.

In the artist’s own words:

“Green Cube is about vague feelings of apprehension as one subconsciously calculates the vast quantities of art (and the art-like) currently materializing in the world; the pressure of trillions of images crowding formerly human culture, and the variable quality of the sorting systems administered by society's gatekeepers. It is about rejecting, because I am sick of it, the pseudo-scientific R&D feel of the white cube gallery spaces in favor of something dark, irrational and vaguely salty. The accompanying lace paintings are about using beauty as a way to bypass the art world’s control systems, and connecting directly with audiences through their guts rather than through courses in art appreciation.”

MARK FLOOD is a Houston-based artist who has been exhibiting his work in museums and galleries throughout the United States since the 1970s, with recent International shows. Selected solo shows include Wart Exhibit, Peres Projects, Berlin (2009); Chelsea Whores, Zach Feuer Gallery, New York, NY (2009), Vote Demon Replicant, Locker Plant, Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX (2008) and Lace Paintings, American Fine Art, New York, NY (2004). He has participated in numerous group shows and was recently included in the 2-person show Additional Paintings for ReMap2, Athens Greece (2009), during the Athens Biennale. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts and The Menil Collection, Houston.
